Feel-good Exercises – Children’s Mental Health Week

Children’s Mental Health Week (5 – 11 February) is run and organised by the children’s mental health charity, Place2Be. This year’s theme ‘My Voice Matters’ is about encouraging children and young people to feel confident in expressing themselves.

Our feature today covers feel-good exercises to do as a family to boost confidence, self-esteem and connection. There are lots of ways to get outdoors and get moving and we’ve put together a list of family-friendly exercises suitable for all ages and abilities to help your family stay healthy and happy.

Outdoor Walks – Getting outside and into nature is a free mood booster and offers a change of scenery from normal family life. You can adjust the walk to the age and needs of your children. Walking is a great low aerobic exercise that still works different muscle groups in the body.

Biking – This activity works almost all of your bodies muscles and is a brilliant way to improve cardiovascular health while spending time with your family. Let the kids help plan the routes to get them involved and pack a healthy picnic to stop and enjoy on your route.

Swimming – An enjoyable activity the whole family can look forward to and enjoy. Swimming uses all the muscles in your body while also being a low-impact exercise. You’ll also have lots of fun in the water with your kids.

Dancing – A simple, fun activity which can be done in the comfort of your own home! Turn your kitchen or living room into a mini disco, get some fairy lights up and play some music to create the perfect space to increase your heartbeat and burn calories.

Yoga – There are lots of free online videos to do at home to try some yoga with the kids. Simple stretches, yoga poses and breath work will create a calmer home-life and help your child to develop skills to strengthen their own individual mindfulness.
