Lunchbox Inspiration: 5 Easy Ideas For The School Week

If you’ve ever opened the fridge on a school morning and stared into it hoping a packed lunch might somehow assemble itself, this one’s for you.

As part of the  Sunday Reset, we’re taking some of the thinking out of the week ahead with five simple lunchbox ideas. Nothing elaborate, just easy combinations you can mix, match and adapt to suit your own kids.

MONDAY: The Classic

Sometimes there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a sandwich.

Try ham and cheese, chicken and salad, tuna mayo or whatever reliably comes home eaten rather than squashed at the bottom of the lunchbox.

Add some cucumber or pepper sticks, a piece of fruit and a yoghurt.

Sunday prep: Wash and portion your fruit tonight so Monday morning starts with one less job.

TUESDAY: The Snacky Lunchbox

Not every lunch needs a traditional “main”.

Try crackers, cubes of cheese, sliced chicken or ham, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and some fruit. Think of it as a little pick-and-mix lunch that lets kids graze their way through the box.

For younger children, remember to prepare foods such as grapes and cherry tomatoes appropriately for their age.

WEDNESDAY: The Wrap

When sandwiches are starting to lose their appeal, change the bread rather than reinventing lunch.

Fill a wrap with chicken and cheese, ham and cream cheese, tuna mayo or hummus and salad. Roll it tightly and slice into smaller pieces if that’s easier for little hands.

Add yoghurt, berries and something crunchy on the side.

THURSDAY: The Leftovers Lunch

Before reaching for the bread again, have a look at last night’s dinner.

Cold pasta can become pasta salad. Leftover chicken can go into a wrap. Homemade pizza can be sliced into lunchbox-sized pieces.

It saves food, saves money and, most importantly, saves you having to think of something completely new.

FRIDAY: The Almost-the-Weekend Box

By Friday, we’re working with whatever is left.

Crackers? In they go. Half a cucumber? Perfect. Last yoghurt? Claimed. A lonely wrap? Roll it up with cheese.

Add a small Friday treat if you fancy and call the week successfully completed.

LUNCHBOX HACK

Create a lunchbox drawer or basket.

Keep the things you reach for constantly in one place: reusable snack tubs, sandwich bags or wraps, napkins, cutlery and any cupboard snacks you regularly use.

Then give the fridge its own little lunchbox zone for yoghurts, cheese and other grab-and-go bits. It doesn’t make packed lunches exciting. It does make finding everything at 7.30am considerably less annoying.
