Rights in Action: Embedding the UNCRC Into Everyday Classroom Culture

With the Incorporation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) now fully embedded into Scots Law, children’s rights are no longer just an aspiration – they are a core legal and cultural foundation for every school across the country. However, for classroom teachers, the practical challenge remains: how do we ensure class charters are dynamic, living documents rather than just decorative “wallpaper” by October?

That is the vital question tackled in Episode 29 of Let’s Chat: Leading Learning with Twinkl Scotland.

Hosted by Gillian Steven (Twinkl Scotland’s Primary Segment Manager and experienced primary educator) alongside co-host Adrian Anderson (Leading Learning ECL and formerly a headteacher for over 10 years) , Let’s Chat provides Scottish educators and school leaders with actionable, reflective insights grounded in Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) and current policy.

In this episode, Gillian and Adrian break down a complete, practical roadmap for co-creating child-led, rights-based environments that foster genuine pupil ownership and long-term engagement.

Rather than treating class charters as a one-off August art project, this episode explores how to turn rights into the dynamic social glue of the classroom community. Key discussion points include:

Rights vs. Responsibilities: Untangling the common missteps when linking rights to behaviour policies, establishing how rights are unconditional and non-negotiable.

Fostering True Learner Ownership: Why co-creating charters with pupils changes classroom culture – featuring Gillian’s famous “gold pen” strategy for symbolic learner commitment.

Adapting for Early Years (P1 & P2): Ditching text-heavy displays in early primary settings in favour of play-based floor books, visual tracking and photographic evidence.

Whole-School Impact: Practical strategies like the “Right of the Fortnight” to extend rights-based thinking beyond the classroom into assembly halls, playgrounds and home-school links.

Whether you are starting fresh this term or looking to deepen your school’s rights-respecting ethos, this episode offers a clear, reassuring guide to making the UNCRC meaningful, manageable and impactful for every learner.
