Schools across Scotland are to stay closed on Monday (5 January) as a new amber alert for heavy snow comes into place.
According to The Met Office, another 5-10cm (2-4ins) could fall fairly widely in the north east, Highlands and Northern Isles while a few places on the mainland could possibly see 20-30cm (8-12ins).
These new alerts began at 6pm this evening (Sunday) and will remain in place until 10am on Monday. Meanwhile a yellow warning for snow and ice is in place for parts of northern Glasgow and Fife until Tuesday evening, with a second warning in parts of East Lothian and the Scottish borders until Tuesday morning.
While tomorrow marks the beginning of a new school term the return of pupils from the holiday period has been delayed in Aberdeenshire, Shetland and Orkney, while schools in Aberdeen will have a later start.
Over 100 schools have confirmed they won’t open tomorrow due to the weather warning, with others delaying start times.
The closure list is expected to grow and parents/carers are urged to check their local council and school updates for the latest information on school closures and return dates.
