Sign Language Week is a time to celebrate British Sign Language and the richness of the Deaf community. Through raising deaf awareness, we hope to inspire the next generation to embrace BSL and inclusive communication. For this year, we are proud to partner with the British Deaf Association (BDA) to bring schools across the UK a special School of Signs lesson focusing on Deaf culture and the Deaf community.
This engaging lesson will be delivered through Signature’s School of Signs platform and will be completely free for schools and home educators who are signed up to the platform. The video lesson is pre-recorded and will be released at the beginning of Sign Language Week, with the lesson plan available now, enabling teachers to prepare for delivering the lesson.
Students will learn about Deaf culture from Deaf children as they explore the meaning of sign names and their deaf role models. Alongside this, students will learn BSL vocabulary focused on culture and media, explore identity and community, and take part in fun, interactive BSL games and activities.
This one-off lesson celebrating Sign Language Week is hosted on Signature’s School of Signs platform. The platform, which is free to access all year round, offers schools an engaging and straightforward way to introduce BSL into the classroom. With 15 structured lessons covering a range of topics, alongside resources and homework activities, the programme has been designed with learning and accessibility at the forefront.

Schools can access this special Sign Language Week lesson for FREE by signing up to the School of Signs platform, where you will find Deaf Culture for Sign Language Week in the lessons tab. Once registered, schools can not only access this special episode, but also the wider BSL programme of study on the platform.
Whether your school is already learning with The School of Signs or completely new to BSL, this lesson is a great way to celebrate Sign Language Week and learn about the Deaf community.
