Get Creative with VIBE in the Borders
Galashiels Academy – 18–20 September
Got a young music lover at home? VIBE in the Borders is giving young people the chance to make some noise, get creative and discover what they can do with music this autumn.
This FREE music-making project is open to 30 students in S1–S3 who enjoy music – and they don’t need any previous experience to take part.
Whether they love to sing, rap, play an instrument or DJ, or they’ve never played music before, participants will work alongside guitarist Paul Griffiths and musicians from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra to create their own music in a fun and relaxed environment.
There’s no need to be able to read music either. The sessions are all about experimenting, improvising, sharing ideas and having fun while developing new skills and confidence.
And there’s something exciting to work towards too – participants will have the opportunity to perform as part of Borders Music Festival 2026.
Best for: S1–S3 pupils who love music, singing, performing or simply want to try something new.

Head for an Autumn Adventure at Landmark Forest Adventure Park
Carrbridge, Cairngorms
If your family loves outdoor adventures, autumn is a beautiful time to head into the Cairngorms.
Set amongst ancient pine forest, Landmark Forest Adventure Park combines nature with plenty of family fun.
Children can take on water coasters, discover prehistoric residents in the dinosaur experience, visit the tropical Butterfly House and enjoy aerial adventures amongst the trees.
There’s also the Red Squirrel Trail, which takes families up into the forest canopy for a completely different view of the woodland.

Looking for something spooktacular to do with the kids this Halloween?
Glasgow Science Centre is being transformed into The Witch’s Lair for the return of its legendary indoor Family Halloween Party.
Brave families can explore three floors of interactive science, hands-on activities and Halloween surprises, with plenty of magical mischief for witches, wizards, monsters and minibeasts of all ages.
Head to Spellcasting School to see some magical science in action, journey to Titan in the Planetarium, settle down for a spooky story or get hands-on brewing your own Cosmic Potions.
Children can also create Monster Magnets using the power of magnetism, while braver family members can venture into the witch’s laboratory for some gruesome heart and lung dissections!
And, of course, costumes are encouraged, so it’s the perfect excuse for the whole family to embrace the Halloween spirit.

Go Wild at Highland Wildlife Park
Cairngorms
Autumn is a wonderful excuse to wrap up warm and enjoy a wildlife adventure.
Highland Wildlife Park makes a brilliant addition to a family trip to the Highlands and Cairngorms, giving animal lovers the chance to enjoy a properly wild day out together.
Set within the spectacular Cairngorms National Park, it’s also easy to combine your visit with some time exploring the surrounding forests and Highland scenery.
Best for: Animal lovers, outdoor explorers and families visiting the Highlands.
Discover Scotland’s History
Autumn is also a great time to introduce children to some of Scotland’s incredible history.
Palace of Holyroodhouse – Edinburgh
Sitting at the end of Edinburgh’s famous Royal Mile, the Palace of Holyroodhouse gives families the chance to step into centuries of Scottish and royal history.
It’s a great option for turning a day exploring Edinburgh into something educational too – without the children necessarily realising they’re learning along the way!

Got a very little music fan in the family?
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s Big Ears, Little Ears is a relaxed concert experience created especially for children under five and their grown-ups.
This enchanting, multisensory musical adventure introduces little listeners to a quartet of Scottish Chamber Orchestra musicians in a relaxed, fun and interactive performance.
There are two performances at Cumnock Town Hall on 24 October at 10am and 11.30am.
Better still, children under 18 go free.
It could be a lovely October outing if you’ve been thinking about introducing your little one to the magic of live orchestral music.

If your kids would rather be taking part than watching from the sidelines, Glasgow’s youngest runners have their own big event this autumn.
The AJ Bell Junior & Mini Great Scottish Run takes place in Glasgow on Saturday 3 October 2026, giving Minis aged 3–8 and Juniors aged 9–15 the chance to enjoy their own event-day experience.
Expect plenty of atmosphere, entertainment and cheering as young runners make their way towards that all-important finish line.
