Police Probe Hoax Threat Emails Targeting Scottish Schools

Police are investigating after schools across Scotland received bomb threat emails, which are being treated as a hoax.

Schools in Glasgow, Edinburgh, East Renfrewshire and East Lothian, among other local authorities, received the messages. Both primary and secondary schools are believed to have been targeted.

Schools in Northern Ireland also received an email claiming that “an explosive device” had been placed in 160 schools. The Education Minister, Paul Givan said the message was not being treated as a “viable threat”.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said officers were aware of the threatening messages and confirmed they were being treated as a hoax, with investigations ongoing.

In several parts of Scotland pupils are still on holiday and in others only teachers are in school for an in service day.
