Parents say family mealtimes are a major source of stress

Cooking, meal planning and food shopping are among the biggest weekday frustrations for UK parents, according to new research commissioned by Very Lazy.

The survey of 2,000 UK parents and households found women are almost twice as likely as men to describe getting dinner on the table as a daily source of stress.

While 84% of mothers said they shoulder more responsibility for cooking, meal planning and food shopping than their partner, only 38% of fathers agreed their partner does more.

The findings suggest much of the unseen work behind family mealtimes continues to fall to women, with deciding what to cook and preparing meals everyone will enjoy among their biggest frustrations.

For men, washing up was the least favourite task. Overall, 26% of parents said cooking is one of their biggest weekday frustrations, while 24% cited meal planning and food shopping as major sources of stress. When it comes to kitchen jobs, chopping onions topped the list of chores parents would happily avoid.

One in five (19%) said they would never chop another onion if given the choice, while half said onion tears are the main reason they dread the task.
