New Gaelic Learning Resources Launched for Teachers and School Leaders in Scotland

Teachers and school leaders across Scotland can now access two new professional learning resources designed to support Gaelic education and help develop Gaelic language skills.

Education Scotland has launched the new self-directed online activities, allowing teachers and education professionals to work through the resources at their own pace and at a time that suits them.

The new resources cover leading Gaelic education in Scotland and learning Gaelic for teachers, with the latter aimed at beginners who would like to start developing their Gaelic language skills.

Leading Gaelic Education in Scotland

The first new resource, Leading Gaelic Education in Scotland, is a six-part online programme aimed at existing and prospective leaders of schools and other settings providing Gaelic education.

It builds on Gaelic-related content from the Into Headship programme and is designed to help school leaders develop a greater understanding of Gaelic education.

The programme also explores how positive leadership for Gaelic can benefit schools, education settings and the communities they serve.

Learn Gaelic for Teachers

A second resource has been introduced specifically for education professionals interested in learning Gaelic.

Learn Gaelic for Teachers – A1 SpeakGaelic is a beginner-level resource integrated into Education Scotland’s Professional Learning website.

It allows teachers and other practitioners to develop their Gaelic language skills while also reflecting on their learning as part of their professional development.

As the course is self-directed, participants can work through it at a pace that fits around their existing commitments.

Supporting Gaelic Medium Education

The two new resources join existing professional learning materials supporting Gaelic Medium Education (GME) in Scotland.

Education Scotland also provides resources focusing on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) within a Gaelic Medium Education context.

These materials are available in both Gaelic and English and explore how children’s rights can be embedded within Gaelic Medium Education.

How to access the new resources

The professional learning activities are available through the Education Scotland website.

Teachers and practitioners will need to register and log in to access the activities.

The self-directed format means participants can complete the learning in their own time, providing another flexible way for Scotland’s education workforce to develop their knowledge of Gaelic education and Gaelic language skills.
