There’s great news for cycling and active travel in Scotland’s schools, with more primary schools than ever delivering Bikeability Scotland cycle training to their pupils.
Cycling Scotland recently announced that a record number of primary schools have provided national-standard cycle training, helping thousands of young people develop the skills and confidence they need to make everyday journeys by bike more safely.
A record year for Bikeability Scotland
Over the past year, an impressive 70% of primary schools across Scotland took part in Bikeability Scotland, with more than 56,000 young people benefiting from the training.
For pupils, it’s not simply about learning how to ride a bike. Bikeability helps children become more confident cyclists, understand how to use roads safely and develop skills they can take with them into everyday life.
Young cyclist Kennedi explains:
“Cycling makes me feel good. It’s a really fun thing to do, especially when you learn how to do it. I would say don’t get scared. Just have fun on it.
“In Bikeability we went on the road, and they were teaching us that if we ever did want to go on the roads that you can indicate and you can approach it safely.”
How does Bikeability Scotland training work?
Training is delivered by qualified instructors, who can include external trainers, teachers and parent volunteers.
Level 1 introduces children to cycling through fun sessions in a traffic-free environment, helping them develop basic bike control skills.
Level 2 is the core part of the programme and is typically delivered in P6–P7. Pupils learn important practical skills including signalling, observing their surroundings and making independent decisions when cycling.
How can pupils benefit?
Taking part in Bikeability Scotland can help pupils:
- Gain the skills and knowledge needed to cycle more safely on the road
- Build confidence and develop a greater sense of independence
- Enjoy a fun and engaging form of physical activity
- Support active bodies and healthy minds
For some children, Bikeability can also provide the confidence they need to consider cycling as a practical way of getting around, whether that’s travelling to school, visiting friends or enjoying time outdoors with their family.
How can Bikeability support your school?
There are benefits for the wider school community too. Bikeability Scotland can:
- Support Health and Wellbeing Experiences and Outcomes
- Help improve pupils’ mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing
- Provide opportunities for outdoor learning and Learning for Sustainability
- Help develop pupils’ physical literacy
- Support speaking and listening skills
It’s an opportunity to combine practical learning with physical activity while equipping children with valuable skills for life beyond the classroom.
Could your school get involved?
With 70% of Scottish primary schools already taking part, there’s never been a better time for schools that haven’t yet participated to find out more.
Getting started is straightforward. Schools can contact their local Bikeability Scotland coordinator to learn more about training and how to get involved.
Help your pupils build the skills, confidence and independence to enjoy cycling safely.
